Write, revise, repeat

I graduated from the MFA program in creative writing (fiction) at the University of Michigan, and I also work as a writer/editor, so whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, the work best gets done if I see all the writing I do as just a new assignment. Currently, I’m working on writing fiction.

I'M AN ENGLISH MAJOR -- NOW WHAT?

In 2006, Slate.com rated this book #1 among all available career guides, calling it "by far the most useful, as well as the most fun to read."

Career Night for the Arts is an annual event at Boston College where alumni (like me) who majored in the arts return to campus to advise undergraduates. Year after year, I got the same questions, so I wrote an FAQ handout. I asked myself, ‘If I could tell my younger self everything I wish someone had told me about journalism, publishing, and teaching, what would I say?’ That got the FAQ to about 35 pages.

Around this same time, I got a call from Jane Friedman, then an editor at F+W Media. She said a recent book proposal I’d sent was too similar to a property already in progress. But, Jane said, you have an interesting background, maybe we could work together on a book in the future. I asked Jane what kind of book she might want to do, and she said, Well, ideally, we’d love to have a career guide for English majors...

Lemire has also written several pseudonymous titles for Adams Media, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, on a variety of topics. All of these books are still in print.
